چکیده

Caustic esophageal injury results from accidental ingestion of corrosive in children and intentional in adults [1]. The common causes are ingestion of strong alkali and highly concentrated acids. Once a stricture is identified, esophageal dilatation is initiated and gradually advanced to relieve dysphagia. Chronic inflammation and fibrosis leads to dysplasia which predisposes the epithelium to develop esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [2]. Chronology and incidence of appearance of carcinoma at the site of stricture, however, is a less well-recognized complication that may develop years after the original injury. There are no data from prospective surveillance programs. This study was conducted to study histopathology changes and dysplasia in caustic esophageal strictures on chronic dilatation.

Indigenous Method and Safety of Mitomycin C in Refractory Corrosive Esophageal Strictures

Caustic esophageal strictures still represent a challenge to endoscopist. Standard treatment is regular esophageal dilatation until the resolution of dysphagia. Caustic strictures require dilations more frequently for a positive clinical response [1]. Increasingly frequent dilation may become a selfdefeating cycle in refractory stricture as recurrent trauma to the mucosa, enhance scar formation...

[Endoscopic dilatation of caustic esophageal strictures].

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the results of endoscopic dilatation in caustic esophageal strictures and to analyze the factors associated with a favorable response. PATIENTS AND METHOD We performed a retrospective study of 33 patients who underwent dilatation with Savary bougie between 1989 and 2001. Response to initial dilatation and outcome during follow-up were analyzed. RESULTS The mean age was...

Incisional Therapy: Safe and Effective?

Esophageal strictures are a common problem in gastroenterological practice. Common benign causes include peptic injury, Schatzki's rings, radiation injury, caustic ingestions and anastomotic strictures. Dilation has been the customary treatment for benign esophageal strictures through the years. Although dilation usually results in symptomatic relief, stricture may recur after initial treatment...
